:-) Burk, do you remember having shoes resoled and cleats added to save the heals and tips of the shoes? My father would have that done every couple of weeks to his shoes. And we got to tag along to the shoemakers with him to watch how the shoemaker did the repairs. Good memories. :-)
Yea, that’s something SueQ. My Great Grandfather was a cobbler from Italy, among other things. I remember the metal shoe inserts that slipped onto the metal post, down in our basement in Rochester, NY. I would play with those tools, hammers, and stuff. It was fun beating my shoes to death! 8*)
LOL! Chip Tis a dying art I think. The shoemaker we visited was from Italy also. He and his family lived in the back part of his shop. Your poor shoes! LOL!
Can you still get a shoe shine anywhere? Used to be at the airports the service was offered and at bus stations, etc. Some carried their shoe shine kits and you could get a shine on the streets. Anyone know?
Hi everyone, I haven’t seen a shoe shine stand in years! I used to go to the shoe shop and get my shoes resoled, or more often new heels put on. I used to buy those metal taps and tack them onto my shoe heels to save them from being worn down. Then I liked to hear the sound of them when I walked down the halls at school. Did any of y’all do that?
Come to think of it, I haven’t seen a shoeshine in years! Not even those black and red spinning buffer wheels that you use to see at the shoe store! But I’ve still got the shoe shine box w/foot rest, that my Mom and Dad gave me as a five year old. Yep, yep…dying art, for sure.
I think most of the stuff used to make and repair shoes has now become collector items! :-) I have an old tin, Chip, filled with paste polish, liquid polish, and the buffing pad and block pad to really give the shoes a shine. LOL! One of my youngest daughters friends one time was going for a job interview. He asked if there was anyway to shine up his shoes. I brought out the kit and he just thought it was the neatest thing. He landed the job by the way. LOL! :-) About the only ones still shining shoes that way today , I would guess are the enlisted people. And some ol timmers! :-)
I can’t remember the last time I actually used or saw shoe polish…probably since I was a yonker. I’ll take a sample and see if it still works like I remember, thanks!
The Wolf smells an educated one among us. Not only can she write, but she can spell!! and she can write and spell well enough that lots of folks buy her books. Now I KNOW i need shoe polish…to shine my boots…which are
